Structural audacity

Paul Andreu envisaged a vast area of gardens and cultural buildings, with the Cité des Théâtres serving as its gateway. The building itself is a huge titanium ellipsoid situated like an island in the centre of a lake, accessible via a glass gallery.

The boldness of the structural choices, combined with numerous technical challenges, has made this project exceptional in more ways than one.

Key challenges:

  • ensuring the stability of the metal shell, which spans 140 m in one direction and 210 m in the other,
  • adapting the calculations to comply with Chinese regulations,
  • developing an earthquake-resistant design.
